What is Cultural Competence?

Cultural competence can be defined as ‘a set of cultural behaviors and attitudes integrated into the practice methods of the system, agency, or its professionals that enables them to work effectively in cross cultural situations.

Cultural competency is achieved by translating and integrating knowledge about individuals and groups of people into specific practices and policies applied inappropriate cultural settings.  When professionals are culturally competent, they establish positive helping relationships, engage the client, and improve the quality of services they provide

Diversity is about the recognition and valuing of difference in its broadest sense. It is about creating a working culture and practices that recognize, respect, value and harness difference for the benefit of the organizations and the individual.

Equality is about creating a fairer society where everyone can participate and has the opportunity to fulfil their potential.  It is backed by legislation designed to address unfair discrimination based on membership of a particular group.
